Creating our own Butterflies
Learning Objectives:
- Create a butterfly using hand prints and recycled materials.
- Share about the design of their butterflies.
Activity
Ms Komal read the story, "Butterfly Park" by Elly Mackay to the children. At the end of the story, the park is filled with many colourful butterflies and flowers.

After Ms Komal read the book, she told the children that they are going to create their very own butterflies. The children had to press their hands into paint and create prints on their drawing papers. Then, Ms Komal gave the children a toilet roll and got them to decorate their butterfly's body using white glue and some foam paper, felt, buttons and colourful small stars.

Once the children's art pieces were dried, Ms Komal got the children to share about their butterflies with the class.
Ms Komal displayed the children's butterflies by hanging them all around the classroom. Butterflies were the first insect that the children learnt about as they are engaged in the Insects project.

Creating our own Butterflies
Ms Komal and the Kindergarten 1 children are creating their own butterflies after reading the book, 'Butterfly Park' by Elly Mackay.

Documenting Children's Learning
Teaching Technique
What is Documenting?
Documentation refers to "gathering and organising information to provide a written or pictorial record of children's learning" (MacNaughton and Williams, 2009, p. 296).

Why do we document?
By recording, organising and displaying observations made while children are engaged in the learning experiences, teachers are able to use documentation to revisit and reflect on the children's learning experiences.

How do we document?
We record children's learning by using techniques such as:
Photographs of children's work
Written observations of children's work
Audio-recording children's comments and conversations
Video-recording the process and product of children's learning.
(MacNaughton and Williams, 2009, p. 297)
