Nursery 2

Theme for term 2: Plants around ME!

Topic: Our Little Leaf Litter

At Little Explorers Preschool, the Nursery 1 and Nursery 2 levels share a common theme every term.

However, the topics are chosen based on discussions between the class teachers and the children, therefore being different as every class learns in their own unique way.

After a topic is chosen, teachers and children will work on a collaborative art piece.

This will be done through exploring the different elements of art such as shapes, colours and lines.

Guiding

Guidance is a positive category of discipline used by most, in contrast to punishment, when disciplining children (Marion, 2015).

According to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (2013), setting rules and speaking gently yet firmly are examples of demonstrating guidance.

In the video, Mister Justin these guidance techniques by starting the art class with reinforcing the class rules. He also spoke in a gentle and firm manner to the children.

Scaffolding

Scaffolding is the appropriate levels of support given from a high-skilled other, to a lesser-skilled other (Santrock, 2014).

When children move from one level of competence to a higher one, scaffolding is the process of temporary support and guidance needed to do so (MacNaughton & Williams, 2009).

In order for a scaffolding process to be complete, a child initially unable to perform a task needs to be able to do it after the help of a teacher.

Afterwards, that same child help another child who is unable to perform that same task.

in the video, Mister Justin was able to guide a child initially unable to paint a leaf. When the child managed to do it, she went on to teach another child and the child did manage to do it too, thereby completing the scaffolding process.
